Good Samaritan Food Donation Law

Mother’s Cupboard operates under the protection of the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, a federal law that encourages food donation to nonprofit organizations by protecting donors from liability. This law states that individuals, businesses, farmers, grocery stores, and food producers who donate food in good faith to charitable organizations — like Mother’s Cupboard — are not held liable for any harm that may result from the donation, as long as the food was given in good condition and intended for use by those in need.

This law helps reduce food waste, fight hunger, and ensures that those who give from the heart can do so safely and confidently.
